Reviews

There's a reason that there are so many editions of this work and that it continues to be popular. It's well written, with great examples, and it provides an easy to use review of all art throughout the ages. Sure, it doesn't touch on every single artist. No book could! But it covers major eras and styles so that a person can get a solid grounding in a variety of art traditions. The book has some color plates but most of it is in black and white. Still, that gives you a good starting point. You can see what the Palaces of the Doges in Venice looks like. If you want more information, you can always hop on Google and get thousands of images from various viewpoints. The book gives you that starting point. There are discussions about technique, discussions about light and color, and because it's all part of one cohesive whole the thoughts build on each other. They bring you along into a fuller understanding of the topic at hand.Highly recommended. This is the type of book you keep in your library and pick up occasionally, to read a chapter and refresh yourself. There's always something new to glean. This edition here is the 12th edition "Enlarged and Revised"
